September, design returns to the fore

From international trade fairs to festivals and biennials, September brings together some of the most anticipated events in the design calendar. From Paris and London to Venice, Bologna and Verona, design returns to a dialogue with materials, research, craftsmanship and new visions of living
September brings the international design scene back together in person. After the summer break, trade fairs, festivals and biennials reopen their spaces to new collections, materials and ideas, tracing a creative geography across Europe and bringing some of its most significant events to Italy. A month in which design returns to the material world, craftsmanship and the ability to imagine new scenarios for contemporary living. The journey begins in Venice, where until 30 September the Fondazione Giorgio Cini hosts Homo Faber 2026 – An Island of Light. With artistic direction by Es Devlin, the fourth edition of the biennial dedicated to fine craftsmanship a focus on the relationship between light, materials and manual skills. More than 500 artisans from over 70 countries and around 700 objects come together in a narrative where material becomes a tool for discovery and tradition meets contemporary creativity.

From Venice to Paris, design takes on a more fluid and transversal dimension. From 10 to 14 September, Maison&Objet Paris returns to Paris Nord Villepinte with Pulse in Motion, an edition developed in collaboration with trend forecasting agency NellyRodi. Seven sectors explore new directions in décor, design and the art de vivre, meanwhile from 10 to 19 September Paris Design Week takes design beyond the exhibition halls, bringing together showrooms, galleries, institutions and historic venues across the capital.

A few days later, London becomes a citywide platform for creativity. From 12 to 20 September, the 24th edition of London Design Festival brings together 11 Design Districts and a programme of installations, special projects, talks and collaborations. More than a fair, it is an urban laboratory where design, art, technology, craft and culture engage with the city’s architecture. Among the highlights, the Global Design Forum returns to the V&A South Kensington from 12 to 14 September, while installations and projects unfold across different districts of the capital.

The focus then returns to materials and surfaces. In Bologna, from 21 to 25 September, the 43rd edition of Cersaie – International Exhibition of Ceramic Tile and Bathroom Furnishings puts ceramics, bathroom furnishings and architectural applications centre stage. Five days dedicated to innovation, planning and new applications, with international companies presenting materials and products designed to redefine contemporary spaces. The programme addresses themes ranging from sustainability and artificial intelligence to the relationship between ceramics, architecture and hospitality.

Almost simultaneously, from 22 to 25 September, Marmomac brings the entire natural stone supply chain to Verona: from quarrying and processing to technologies and products for architecture and interior design. The 60th edition celebrates six decades of history, reaffirming the event’s role as an international hub for companies, professionals, architects and designers, as well as a platform for exploring the evolution of an ancient material that remains central to contemporary design research. Five events, therefore, and five complementary perspectives: fine craftsmanship in Venice, design and the art de vivre in Paris, urban experimentation in London, ceramics in Bologna and natural stone in Verona. A September in which design becomes, before anything else, a meeting point between culture, technology, materials and creativity.
