Textile dialogues

Carpets that speak of fashion, of wool and silk from the Himalayas, or try to raise awareness on the theme of recycling. Above all, they are creations that demonstrate the precious qualities of things ‘made by hand’

As for tapestries that have always been forms of textile art, halfway between crafts and artistic representation, this selection covers a series of artifacts that not only warm up spaces, but also decorate them through a mixture of visual languages, games of form and light, different depths and thicknesses, all created by means of careful workmanship.

The Haute Couture Collection is a series of hand-tufted carpets in viscose and wool designed by Laura Pozzi Studio for Besana Carpet Lab. The collection takes its cue from the sartorial quality called into play by major couture houses to invent, produce and show their exclusive creations. High Curves (on cover) is a geometric project clearly derived from the 1970s. The curves for geometric designs that dance in contemporary tones and refined colors.

Merveilles d’Egypte is the name of the collection of fabrics, wallpapers and carpets by Pierre Frey, where pyramids and decorations appear as a tribute to life on the Nile. In collaboration with the Louvre, to celebrate the bicentenary of the discovery of the hieroglyphs on the part of Champollion in 1822, the new collection of Maison Pierre Frey presents a wide range of motifs and designs, from faithful reproductions to free inspirations. The jacquards and prints suggest hieroglyphs and the frescoes of ancient buildings. The 3D prints reveal the volume of the bas reliefs of the temple.

Craftsmanship also means respect for the environment and the recycling of materials, as in the case of Metamorfosi by Paola Lenti, a collection created in collaboration with the Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana. The tapestry is made through the combination of round elements on which to sew an application with an oval form. These parts are composed of an upper layer in Brio fabric – obtained from scraps that would otherwise become refuse – and a lower layer in synthetic felt – made in polyester fiber derived from PET bottles, which in turn are 100% recyclable – bonded together with stitched borders.

GAN also fights for the environment, with the project Plastic Rivers. Created by Álvaro Catalán de Ocón, the collection of four carpets raises awareness while using crafts to combat one of the worldwide problems of the industrial age: plastic refuse. INDUS (in the photograph) and the other carpets YANGTZE, NIGER and GANGES are made with 100% recycled PET fibers, offering faithful representations in scale of the four most polluted and polluting rivers on the planet. The carpets are made by Indian artisans with the hand-tufting technique that makes it possible to create different thicknesses, cutting the threads at different heights to obtain a three-dimensional topographic effect.

Illulian presents Interlace by Zaha Hadid Architects. The woven silk threads create a glow that interacts with the opacity of the Himalayan wool to generate dynamic, iridescent games of light between the design and the surface. The drawings narrate the transformation of natural materials, appearing as a series of patterns that imitate dense, undulated networks of organic forms. This model knotted and carded by hand is also part of the limited-edition collection.

Kvadrat, in collaboration with the Belgian artist Alain Biltereyst, presents the Quotes collection of curtains and carpets. The artist’s Untitled drawings translate the geometric language of his paintings into fluid woven geometries. In the image, Untitled_AB11 color Pink plays with forms, scales and dimensions, bringing out the beauty of the forms and signs created by man.

Mifune, Caleido Concept No. 2 collection by Battilossi

Three individual designs interpreted in 27 color combinations for Caleido Concept No. 2, the new Battilossi collection of carpets in pure Ghazni wool, knotted by hand in Lahore, Punjab, with personalized colors, sizes and materials. Three new designs – Akira, Mifune (in the photo) and Kitano – freely based on the iconic motifs of vintage Japanese kimonos and fabrics. Gamla is the knotting technique used to make the carpet, a method of Scandinavian origin that combines knotting and flat weaving in a combination that triggers a particular 3D effect.
