Flos by night

Konstantin Grcic designs a luminous sculpture for Flos that reveals its presence in darkness

It glows in the darkness. Noctambule is an ethereal presence that emerges into sight thanks to its luminous nature. A micro-work of architecture, whose forceful geometric lines and uniform modular rhythm permit creation of compositions that loom in space, invading it with intense diffused light.

Konstantin Grcic has entrusted the poetic character of this project made for Flos to the name itself: “Noctambule: the night owl, the nocturnal animal. Almost invisible by day, but fascinating and active at night. A perfect analogy,” the designer explains. The material generates the desired effect. “The collection of lamps is made with modules of blown glass, which are transparent and hence nearly invisible during the day. When turned on in the darkness, they are transformed into splendid, glowing lamps.”

The collection relies on this modular approach: like cylindrical lanterns, the individual pieces can be connected to create a luminous column or a chandelier, thanks to the LED strips lodged at the base and the rings used to connect the modules. All enhanced by dome-shaped or conical heads.

“The exceptional LED technology that lights up the lamps is discreetly built into the joints between the glass modules. It is almost imperceptible, but ready for activation at nightfall.” A magical, enveloping effect.

The charm of this creation has led to its inclusion in the exclusive selection of products for the ADI Design Index 2020, making it eligible for the 27th Compasso d’Oro awards. The collaboration between Flos and Konstantin Grcic has already led to outstanding results in the past, with the Mayday and OK collections, both winners of the prestigious design prize, respectively in 2001 and 2016.
