Design becomes installation

The Milan Triennale, Manifattura Tabacchi and Mingardo present three exhibition/installations to visit during Milano Design Week. Where design, art and social commitment join forces

Milano Design Week is not just product, and design is more than practical projects. They become moments of artistic research, opportunities for cultural reflections, and even for commitment to social causes. During the Fuorisalone three exhibitions have been opened which deserve attention, in this sense, and certainly call for a visit. At the Triennale you can see “Il Salone / la Città”, a reminder of the close bond across six decades between Milan and the grand event of the Salone del Mobile. The second attraction is the installation “Aria di Cantiere” presented by Manifattura Tabacchi and created by the designer Duccio Maria Gambi, with an accent on sustainable creativity. The third stop on our tour is “A flame for research” organized by the Mingardo metalworking shop, to support the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri (in collaboration with Christie’s for the auctioning of the products).

Il Salone / la Città
Museo della Triennale
(4-12 September)

Since 1961, the city of Milan has been the venue for an intense calendar of exhibitions, shows, performances, installations, communication campaigns and publications that have accompanied the trade fair, establishing close ties with the international design community and broader world of the city of Milan. The exhibition il Salone / la Città, conceived by Triennale Milano’s Museo del Design Italiano and curated by Mario Piazza, arises from this relationship. The exhibition looks back over 60 years of cultural projects that the Salone del Mobile.Milano has put on around the city and it offers an interpretation of the most significant works that have conveyed the best in design to a public of enthusiasts and consumers throughout the history of the event. Accompanying the trade fair with other exhibitions, and other opportunities to see and reflect, means sensing the potential offered by an original interaction between design and the city.

Recovery, reuse, sustainable transformation: these are the basic values of the project “Aria di Cantiere” created by the Florence-based designer Duccio Maria Gambi, and presented at Manifattura Tabacchi for Fuorisalone 2021 in Milan. The installation stems from reflections prompted by the spaces of Manifattura Tabacchi, a former factory to the west of the historical center of Florence, that is now being revitalized thanks to an ambitious urban regeneration project, as a new district built around a creative center for contemporary makers: the Factory. With the project “Aria di Cantiere” Duccio Maria Gambi brings the spirit of Manifattura Tabacchi to Milan: his works are made with materials salvaged from construction sites in the former industrial area, giving rise to a series of free forms for versatile use, balanced between sculpture, outdoor furnishings, micro-architecture and installation.
