Enveloping, protective, suspended, or shell-like: some design icons seem to spring from an idea as ancient as it is instinctive – the nest. These are armchairs and seats that do more than just accommodate the body; they create an intimate space in which to retreat, relax, and feel protected.
The Egg chair (on cover) was designed by Arne Jacobsen for Fritz Hansen in 1958 to furnish his masterpiece: the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (now the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel). Compact and enveloping, its shell is made of a synthetic material, padded with polyurethane foam, and upholstered in a vast range of fabrics (reorganized this year into 24 coordinated options) or leather. The star-shaped aluminum base is mounted on a satin-polished steel pedestal.
